The Word of the Cross is the Power of God

Our Portion Forever

Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Psalm 73:25–26 ESV.

You have an important appointment coming up, one you cannot postpone or skip. Once the time arrives, you’ll have to be there, whether you want to or not. Everyone does, regardless of who they are. I am, of course, talking about death. Death is the great equalizer, the great enemy that comes for everyone equally. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a man or a woman, black or white, rich or poor, fat or thin. Eventually, death will reach you.

To anyone who lives in the world, this is the worst news in the world. It’s over, all over. But to Christians, it is only the beginning.

When we first get to heaven, we won’t be looking for deceased relatives or pets; we will be enraptured by the eternal beauty and glory of the Lord. Everything else will pale in comparison to him. Finally, we will be united with God, our loving creator who has been caring for us our entire life. From the womb until our grave, he was with us, sustaining our bodies from moment to moment, giving life to every cell in our body.

Finally, we will see him as he is, and we can be together with him forever and ever in eternity, forever safe from the sinful poison of this fallen world, always grateful, always rejoicing.

The Psalmist wasn’t terrorized by death; he knew what was waiting for him. Even though his flesh and heart might fail, God was his portion forever.

God himself is the greatest treasure that is waiting for us in heaven. He is our portion forever.

Only For A Season

God only lets the wicked triumph in order to reveal his power and glory through them later, magnifying his holy name to the entire world.

The Two Ways

We can have a foretaste of the sweetness that is to come by diving into the Holy Word that the LORD Yahweh has written to us. In the first Psalm, the Lord tells us that we will be blessed if we do not follow this world’s evil customs but rather make his law the foundation and center of our lives by meditating on it night and day.
